Bursaries For Study At University; Engineering Courses

WELLINGTON, Last Night (P.A.) —Bursaries for full-time university study in electrical, mechanical, and civ- engineering are being offered on a competitive basis by the Public Service .Commission. Bursars will receive a subsistence allowance of £7O for the university year, plus a lodging allowance of £4O if required to live away from home. Tuition fees, and the cost of standard text books will also be met.

Applicants must have passed at least the University Entrance Examination but special consideration will be given those who are credited with special bursaries examination conducted by the Education Department or National University Entrance Scholarship. Applications will also be considered from those who have passed the engineering intermediate examination.

Successful applicants will be appointed to the permanent staff of the Ministry of Works, or 11A State Hydro-Electric Department, and during the long vacation will be employed at the normal fate of salary. When they have completed the course, bursars will receive permanent appointments on the engineering staff of the department concerned. The term of the bursary will be four years for appointees leaving school, and three years for candidates who have passed the engineering intermediate examination. In cases of special merit, a further year will be granted to cover an honours degree. A bond will be required from bursars to ensure that on the completion of the course they will serve in the department concerned for a period at least equal to the term of the bursary.
