Small Fire At Sea Quickly Quelled By Crew

AUCKLAND, Last Night (PA).—A small fire in the No. 2 hold was quickly detected and smartly extinguished during the voyage by the' crew of the W. R. Carpenter Ltd.’s! 4873-ton steamer Suva, which arrived at Auckland this morning from Sydney. Steel and hardwood piles in the hold were slightly damaged by fire and water. The Suva had 14 passengers and an Australian cargo which included fruit One of the passengers said it was believed the fire was started by a cigar ette butt falling through a ventilator Immediately after the fire, a notice was displayed warning passengers not to try to throw cigarette butts overboard. It is not decided yet whether a geni eral average will be struck.
