Government Scheme For School Of Instruction In Industry

Support for the principle of a proposal that a school of instruction in industry be inaugurated in the city during the early part of 1949 was given at the annual meeting last night, of the Wanganui branch of the Wellington Manufacturers’ Association. The school, if formed in the city, would be part of the Government scheme which has as its object the training of a sufficient number of supervisors and instructors in industry, and to teach them to impart their knowledge to others. The subject was introduced by the president, Mr. E. L. Healy, in his annual report, presented at the meeting last night. It was hoped that the first group to take the course would embark on it in 1949, Mr. Healy stated. Each group would consist of 10 persons. The course would cover the fundamentals of good relations and the basic principles required to keep a staff and factories operating smoothly. The complete course would extend over five consecutive days, with two hourly sessions each day. Where supervisors and others had had the benefit of this course, it was claimed that there had been a marked reduction in the time given to instruction before proficinecy was reached, and any unnecessary details had been eliminated, with consequent increases in production, Mr. Healy stated. The secretary. Mr. S. K. McCallum, explained that the scheme originated jn England. Miss Huntingdon studied the scheme in England and brought details of it to New Zealand. She was now working under the Department of Labour and giving instructions in various parts of the Dominion. In reply to a question, Mr. McCallum said that the cost of the scheme was being paid by the Government. The meeting decided to send a circular to members of the Wanganui branch seeking their views on the subject.
