Avowed Communists Alleged To Be Among Mataroa Immigrants
PARLIAMENT BLDGS.. Last Night (PA).—"Passengers who arrived in New Zealand yesterday by the liner Mataroa allege that the draft of immigrants aboard that vessel included a number of avowed Communists who paraded their Communistic principles and disloyalty to the British Empire by refusing to stand during the playing of the National Anthem and by other similar expressions of disloyalty,” said Mr. Goosman (Opp., Piako) in the House of Representatives today. He gave notice to ask the Minister of Labour if any steps were taken by those responsible for the selection of immigrants coming to New Zealand to ensure that no persons were selected who were avowed Communists or otherwise associated with disloyal and subversive organisations. Mr. Goosman asked that if no such steps had been taken in the past, the Minister immediately cable those responsible instructing them to take every possible precaution to prevent the inclusion in future drafts of such undesirable types of immigrants.
