Railways Limit Of Liability As Common Carrier Amended
PARLIAMENT BLDGS.. Last Night (PA).—The limit of liability of the railways as a common carrier for the loss or damage to goods, unless the value is specially declared and increased charges are paid, is brought, within the scope of the Carriers Bill by a new clause introduced today for inclusion in the Bill. The Minister of Justice (Mr. Mason) explained that it had been intended to alter the liability of .the Railways Department to bring it into line with the general law ip a Railways Consolidating Bill, but as this Bill would now have to wait until the next session, the department’s liability had now been fixed by an amendment to the Carriers’ Bill. Another new clause increases the aggregate amount for all claims for the loss of life or injury in a marine disaster from £l5 for each ton of ship’s tonnage to £3O for each ton of ship’s tonnage, but this shall only apply where it is a contract of carriage from one place in New Zealand to another.
