Call To Fire. The Wanganui Fire Brigade received a call to the railway yards at 3.42 p.m. yesterday where a heap of sawdust had caught alight. The outbreak was quelled before any damage was done. Swimming Attendances. With the recent improved weather, better attendances have been recorded at the Central swimming baths. Last week-end. about 340 adults and children attended. In the past four weeks about 1700 adults and children have patronised the baths, the highest total in any one week being 700. Streets Being Tidied. Since early this month two motor mowers and one horse mower from the Wanganui City Council have been continuously engaged in cutting grass in the streets of the city. At this period of the year there is a heavy growth of grass ad the task of cutting it is no light one. It is hoped to have the job completed before Christmas. Rover Scouts. Co-ordination of Rover Scout activities in the North Island and an interchange of ideas and plans for the future were discussed at a conference of Rover Scouts and leaders held at Palmerston North at the week-end. The Wanganui East and Gonville Rover Scout crews were represented and Messrs. C. W. Baker, Scout County Commissioner for Wanganui County and L. M. Hallas also attended the conference. R.S.A. Membership. The quarterly report of the president of the Wanganui Returned Services’ Association (Mr. H. R. Gilberd) staes that the membership of the association is 2330 of whom 2019 are financial members. Of the total membership, 720 members are veterans of World War I and 1610 are returned men from World War 11. Of the unfinancial members. 43 are World I men and 268 World War II men.

R.S.A. Functions. The Wanganui Returned Services Association will hold its annual children’s Christmas party on December 18. There will be a real live Father Christmas, a Christmas tree and presents for all the children. The function last vear had to be cancelled because of the incidence of infantile paralysis. The association will hold its annual picnic at Upokongaro on January 30 and the annual bowling tourament will be held next March.
