Disappointment In Auckland That The Royal Tour Is Off
“News that the Royal tour of New Zealand is postponed is a great disappointment, but the citizens will be more deeply concerned at the cause of the postponement,” said the Mayor of Auckland (Mr. Allum). “To learn that the cause is the unsatisfactory condition of His Majesty’s health comes as a sad shod* to all of us. I am sure every one will pray that soon His Majesty will be restored to complete health and that the visit, now unhappily delayed, will soon take place.” Mr. Allum said much preliminary work had been done by the city. That work would not be lost and threads could be picked up when the Royal visit actually took place. Most of the special functions organised for the Royal visit to Auckland district have been cancelled, but funds and materials on hand may be retained for use in a later visit, 01 in some cases, for other public entertainment. Many commercial firms wil not know their position until it is made clear when and if the visit will not be made and how far the manufacture o certain goods on order has advanced. Insurance circles stated today that relatively few firms had insured against the tour not taking place, largely because of the high premiums asked. Only a few thousand pounds would be involved over the whole Dominion.
