Marist Win Outright, T.O.B. And Wanganui Have First Innings Wins In Wanganui Cricket

The third series of senior matches played tinder the control of the Wanganui Cricket Association, concluded with the second day’s play on Saturday, in pleasant and ideal cricketing weather. Features of the day’s play were: A chanceless century by J. S. Ruinbold (Wanganui), Marist’s outright win over Technical College and T.0.8.’s failure to gain full points over Collegiate School in an exciting and enjoyable game.

Stumps scores were: Wanganui (262) v. United 176. Marist (160) and (no wickets for 47) v. Technical (131 and 61). ■T.0.8. (200) v. Collegiate (83 and 141). Wanganui and Marist new share the lead in ths sompetition with eight championship points. T. 0.8. and United have seven, Collegiate School two and Technical College one. WANGANUI v UNITED. A chanceless, even century, scored patiently in 149 minutes and including 6 fours and 55 singles, by J. S. Rumbold eclipsed all performances of the day. This competent batsman was not troubled by the United bowling. Though there was criticism in that he didn't bat aggressively when set. even disdainfully refusing to punish some erratic bowling, it must be remembered that his side had all the afternoon to score the required runs, and he adopted the right attitude of remaining at the crease and waiting for the runs to come. Rumbold is a decided acquisition to Wanganui cricket and is the most correct stroke-player that this city has. Wanganui had live wickets down for 100 runs when their captain, W. A. Priest, joined Rumbold. These two added 92 for the partnership which won the game. Priest batted confidently and soundly and even though he was dropped early, his innings of 51 was a well-merited one. Friest and Rumbold ran well between the wickets, and aided by United's sluggish ground fielding, stole many quick run singles. Yet it was Rumbold's faulty calling that resulted in Cave and -Glover being run oat. Davidson and Felts bowled steadily but did not get that assistance from the pitch necessary to make their deliveries hostile. Hanley and Low, who both had tlteir share of bowling did not impress. The studests gave of their best, tried all they could, but they lack the temperament and, at present, the ability needed to win matches in the senior competition. Marist gained the first innings leod with second knocks by Nimmo and Rutherford. The latter, a newcomer to Wanganui cricket, created a favourable impression with the bat, as he also did with some excellent fielding. Whitiwhiti and Poka bowled their last deliveries well, but were not helped by the faulty field placements. Technical College have some promising bowlers, but they do not bowl to a set plan or to a well placed field. This has been a detrimental feature of the Technical College's game for about the last six years. vVhitiwhiti took a brilliant one-hand-ed catch to dismiss Nimmo, but the general standard of though Keen, lacked polish. When they batted a second time the students were troubled by the faster wicket which was an exact contrast to the slower one the week before. Whitiwhiti showed that he is a useful all-rounder in making a sound 22, but the other batsmen failed to score off the accurate bowling of Beard, McConway and Nimmo. The Tech, batsmen have a negative approach towards the game, and most of of them step away from balls on the off stump. This is probably due to the bad wickets on which they received their early coaching. Technical College.—First innings 136. Marist.—First innings: S. Crafar, c Keats, b Whitiwhiti, 0; N. Wallace,

Bowling: Whitiwhiti, 0 for 20; Poka, 0 for 5; Hipango, 0 for 19. T. 0.8. v. COLLEGIATE, T. 0.8. lost their last seven wickets for 65 runs. This was due to the attempts to score runs quickly. Most of the batsmen were dismissed in trying to hit the bowling out ol the ground. Jones gave a delightful exhibition of powerful stroke-making. For once he curbed his impatience and showed that he can be a good batsman. Dismissed by a rank full-toss ended an innings which was a pleasure to the spectator. Collegiate commenced their second innings at 2.25 p.m. and T. 0.8. were looking for an outright win, which did not eventuate, owing to the failure of the fieldsmen to accept the numerous catches offered. Reisterer, the opening batsman, who scored 69 runs, gave a number of chances. Even though he had anxious moments against most of the bowlers, he played some powerful shots on the leg side and hit nine fours and one six.

At 4.45, Collegiate were 85 for two wickets, then Ibbetson and Brown, with some fine bowling, changed the complexion of the matcu. Wickets began to tumble and at 5.25 Collegiate's last pair were at the wickets with the score at 114, and they needed three runs to avert an innings defeat. Catches were still being dropped, and with the bowlers trying all they knew the game reached as exciting stage. However, the tailenders added 27 vital runs and when Marks was finally caught, there was no time left for T. 0.8. to bat. Marks and Hare were not disturbed by the position of the game and deserve praise for their determined batting. Ibbetson, last season’s most successful T. 0.8. bowler, returned to form with some hostile bowling. An inspired spell brought him three wickets in two overs. Brown had the greatest number of overs, bowled steadily, but was not helped by missed catches. Scores were: — Collegiate School.—First innings, 83. T.OB. —First innings: N. A.
