Wellington Retains Tennis Trophies Against Hutt Valley
WELLINGTON, Last Night (PA).— Though many observers had practically made up their minds before the contest that Wellington would lose the Nunneley casket tennis trophy to Hutt Valley in the challenge .matches played on Friday and Saturday, the final result gave Wellington a clear win by 8 matches to four. Hutt V> ley also failed in their challenge lor the men’s trophy, the Wilding Shield, which Wellington retained by nine matches to three. Miss N. Fleming (Wellington) followed up her outstanding victory over Mrs. J. Robb by beating and vigorously driving Mrs. J. Graham in the third set. Less troubled by the wind t?»an her opponent, Miss J. Webster (Wellington) surprised with a two-set victory over Miss P. Longton, who had impressed so favourably against Mrs. J. Webb. In the Shield series the three. matches in which R. Robb and: D.' Smith featured on Saturday were the ‘ ones Hutt Valley looked to as possible victory, but only Robb’s single fell to them, even though Smith scored one more game in his three-set single than his victorious opponent. J. Hamilton. Robb’s win over Angas was specially meritorious in view of the twist Robb gave his ankle early in the third set, which kept him limping slightly Bold (Hutt) was good enough against R. McKenzie to make the rallies bright, but he won only one game to McKenzie’s 12. Saturday's results, Wellington players mentioned first:—Wilding Shield: R. McKenzie beat O. Bold, 6-1, 6-0; C. Angas lost to R. Robb, 6-3, 1-6, 4-6; S. Painter beat F. S. Ramson, 6-2 6- J. Hamilton beat D. Smith, 6-4, 1-6, 7-5; McKenzie and Painter beat Bold and Ramson, 6-2, 6-1; Angas and Hamilton beat Robb and Smith, 6-3, 7- Wellington won 9 matches to 3, 20 sets to 10 and 148 games to 118. In the Nunneley Casket, Mrs. J. McVay lost to Mrs. J. Robb, 3-6, 6-4, 5- Miss N. Fleming beat Mrs. J. Graham, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4; Mrs. J. Webb beat Miss E. McNeill. 6-4. 4-6 6-4; Miss J. Webster beat Miss P. Longton 6- 6-3; Mesdames McVay and. Webb beat Mesdames Robb and Graham, 6-2, 10-8; Misses Fleming and Webster lost to Misses McNeill and Longton, 3-6, 4-6. Wellington won 8 matches to 4, 17 sets to 14, and 170 games to 165.
