ROYAL TAN AND CORAL ARC SHARE METROPOLITAN HONOURS

CHRISTCHURCH, Last, Night (Special).—Tauloeh’s wide winning margin in the Churchill Stakes and Idle Jest’s facile victory in the New Zealand Oaks, together with a stirring finish in the Metropolitan Handicap, in which even the camera could not separate Royal Tan and Coral Are—these provided tlie features of the second .lay of tlie C.J.C. meeting at Riecarton yesterday.

vniy one tavourite was successful, that being Royal Tan, who had to share winning honours with Coral Are. The several large dividends included one of more than four-score when Eulogize won the Otaio Plate and another of more than a score for IVaicoe’s supporters in the Seymour Handicap. Tauloch, the good Balloch three-year-old raced by Mr. W. S. Goosman and trained at Takanini by F. Smith, cleared away Irom the Churchill Stakes field to win by a big margin. The day was tine and the track fast, which suited Tauloeh’s speed. Hall a mile from home he was eight lengths in front of Excellency, who was ten lengths clear of General Argosv, and there were, gaps to the others. Tauloch was given a breather on the top turn and was then given his head in the straight- Though he could have done no better he won easily by five lengths from Beau le Havre, who made up about 15 lengths on the Aucklander in the last /.ir furlongs. Excellency was half a ength back, third. Signal Officer, who was fourth, did not race kindly and is to be sent home. Tauloch's time, 2,3 2-5, is the fastest since the Churchill Stakes was established in 1945. The Riecarton record is 2.2 4-5, established by Bronze Eagle in 1931. METROPOLITAN DEAD-HEAT Royal Tan and Coral Arc, who were strongly fancied candidates in the New Zealand Cup, in which both suffered interference when Ascot Lad le .. eari-heated in the Metropolitan Handicap. Sal’s Pal acted as pacemaker for the first mile. Then Kartikeya took over and led into the straight from Riverview, Ascot Lad, Sal’s Pal. Coral Arc, Royal Tan. The Grate and Liebestraum. Coral Arc had charge at the distance, but Royal Tan finished brilliantly and a photofinish resulted in a dead-heat. Ascot Lad was two lengths back, third, and Liebestraum fourth, narrowly beating Renowned, Riverview, The Grate and Barrage, who were a'most in line. Kartikeya again failed badly in the closing stages of the race. EASY FOR IDLE JEST Idle Jest, a filly bv Foxbridge from Aboyne, and raced bv the Riecarton trainer J. S. Shaw, made an exhibition of the Oaks field. She had a perfect trail behind Sea Shanty and Balkis all the way, and after fol dwing these two and Trident into the straight strode away to win very easily by four lengths from Flying Sovereign, who was not well p'aced for the greater part of the journey but easily beat the others. Golden Amber, last at the three furlongs, also finished wel l for third and Hush was fourth, the others being outclassed. Curtana was never going like a winner and finished last, JULIUS CAESAR AGAIN Julius Caesar, who won the Winter Cup at Riecarton last August, had a comfortable win in the Jockey Club Handicap. The margin was only a neck over Citril, but he had that mare well beaten. Lexia was the first leader but Julius Caesar went ahead at the end of two furlongs and was in front for the remainder of the race. Citril and the favourite, Fuil Plrjf, tried to pull the leader hack in the straight, but had no chance. Demonic. who was not well placed for the first half-mile, came on for fourth, and Ned Kelly, Magical. Patmos and Desert Girl were best of the remainder. Desert Girl ran a fair race after being one of the last three at the halfmile. Aggravation never got awav from the rear of the field. Winter Sweet dwelt at the start and though she moved up handv at the half-mile she petered out again in the straight and finished ninth. THE MINOR EVENTS Sphere narrowly won the Middleton Hurdles from Benbecula, who would have won had he jumped better. The two-year-old race resulted in a close finish, Golden Spa taking a narrow decision over Lord Cranleigh, with Trinidad. Western Winner and Bosun all close up. His Nibs and Dexter were next. Lord Cran.eigh. w ho drew wide out, was forced over extra ground. He looks one of the best of the two-year-olds raced at the

Cup meeting and the one most likelj to carry on. Eulogize, winner of the Otaio Plate, paid a win dividend of more than four score. He is a well-bred colt, being by Finis from Praise, and is trained in the same stable as the Oaks winner. His owner is Mr. Alfred Louisson, who bred many good performers from Praise, a Koatanui-bred daughter of Limond and famous Eulogy.
