Relatives Of The Condemned Japs Want Their Ashes

(N. Z. P. A. —Reu ter—Copyright) TOKIO, Nov. 26 (Recd. Gpm).— Thousands gathered in central Tokio today to sign a petition to General MacArthur, asking that the ashes of General Tojo and the six other war criminals sentenced to death should be returned to their families. The petition said the punishment should end with the execution, and that it would be a crime to punish the families by withholding the ashes. Mrs. Tojo personally appealed for the return of her husband’s ashes. Tojo’s attorney, Mr. George Blewett, today met General MacArthur at his request. General Walker, commanding general of the Sth Army announced today that General MacArthur had decided to bar all but military witnesses from the executions. No further information would be made available until the executions were carried out. General Walker said he agreed with the decision to bar all but military witnesses from the executions, because he did not like the "gruesome” publicity given the Nuremberg executions. "I think the pictures and publicity given the Nuremberg executions were a grave mistake,” he said.
