Wanganui Singer’s Success In Sydney Eisteddfod

Advice has been received by Mr. Gordon Mcßeth of the success attending Mr John Martin Young’s three entries in the City of Sydney Eisteddfod, held in September. Mr. Mcßeth was Mr Young’s original teacher in Wanganui, when he was resident here with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. S. Young. In the adult and intermediate class, John Young was the y.oungest competitor, he now having a deep bass voice. In the singing of “Easter Hymn" he was placed fourth, with a total of 84 marks of a possible 100, by examiner, Mr. Albert Keats, who remarked concerning this number “very line tonal quality. Intelligent and colourful interpretation." In the singing of the “White Owl," In which Mr. Keats awarded 85 marks, he observed: “Fine, lull, resonant quality. Correct atmosphere realised. A difficult song very well sung. All effects were legitimately achieved. Voice shows great promise.” He was placed second for this number. Florence Astdal, who occupies a place in Australian music today comparable to that of Madame Melba, placed John Young third in the singing of "Oh Isis,” with 89 per cent, marks. Her comment was: “You have an excellent voice. Do keep on with your studies.” Mr. John Young is now resident in Sydney- with his parents.
