Chairman Of Harbour Board Replies To Electors’ Association

Replying to statements made in a letter dated September 30 received by the Wanganui Harbour Board from the organising secretary of the Wanganui Electors’ Association, the board chairman, Mr. E. A. Millward, stated that all jyorks undertaken had been on the recommendation of the board’s consulting engineer, Mr. Kennedy, and had had the approval of the Marine Department. In addition to this, said Mr. Millward, the board had the co-operation of the District Engineer or the Public Works Department, who was acting on behalf of the Ministry of Works. “At no time during the past four years, since my election to the board,’’ added Mr. Millward, “has any major work been carried out without the approval of the Marine Department,! and we have had periodical visits from! the engineer oi the Ministry of Works advising us of the best methods to be 1 adopted. For your information, all such work must be approved by the Marine Department. “The question of bringing the current through the basin wall, as suggested bv our supervisor, Mr. Mullins, was at one time thought feasible by my board, but on the advice of our consulting engineei and on instructions from the Ministry of Works, we were not permitted to make such an experiment,” stated Mr. Millward. The opinion of the board was that, if statements had to be publicised by the association in an endeavour to arouse civic spirit so desirea in the city, the association should make sure of having the facts coniirmed before broadcasting them. All data referred to in the circular could have been answered by a visit to the board's office, and the managing secretary would be happy to supply the association with any further information if a call was made at the hoard's office.
