Chance Gave Janis Paige Movie Career

Janis Paige, whose real name is Donna Mae Jaden, was born in Washington. A chance trip to California decided that*Hollywood was*the place for mother and herself, and their arrival there was followed by a few months’ singing lessons. As a child Janis, as she was later to be known, could warble "My Blue Heaven.” She had a chance to substitute at the Hollywood Canteen and her first appearance brought an interview with Mrs. Goldwyn, who insisted she see her husband at M.G.M. Warners snapped her up ■'•and she appeared in their film version of "Hollywood Canteen” and has since appeared in “Of Human Bondage” and “Her Kind of Man” and not only appeared lovely, but also sang three songs in that picture and so pleased everybody that Mr. Warner and his Brothers raised her to star rank immediately. Further pictures include "Winter Meeting,” “One Sunday Afternoon” and “The linger Brothers.” Recently she was crowned Queen of the Los Alamitos Air Field, and still more recently she married Frank Martinelli, a non-nrofessional. “Churchill’s Voice” In New Film One of the main parts in the new Ealing Studios production “Against The Wind” is played by Peter tiling, the man who. during the war, translated and rebroadcast all of Mr. Churchill’s speeches to the German people. Austrian-born Tiling, whose part in “Against The Wind” is that of the sabotage leader whose capture by the Germans provide the motive of the picture, came to Britain soon after the advent of the Nazie regime and worked for years as an announcer and producer in the 8.8. C. European Service. He made many films in Germany before conning to Britain. During the war, Peter Illing became known to the Germans as “Churchill’s Voice.” Robert Beatty, Jack Warner and Simone Signoret star in this latest Michael Balcon production.

Famous Re-Issue. "Anthony Adverse” which was filmed from Hervey Allen’s best-sel-ling novel, is being re-issued this year. It was one of Warners Bros, most successful pre-war motion pictures and is remarkable for its cast, a number of whom are Academy Award winners. Set in Napoleonic times the story, moves from Italy and France to African jungles and Cuban settlement. Fredric March who has twice won Oscars, has the title role, and with him are Claude Rains. Louis Hayward, Akim Tamiroff, Edmund Gwenn, Ralph Morgan, Anita Louise, Olivia de Havilland, Gale Sondergaard.

Astaire Opens New Studio. Fred Astaire's first dance studio on the West Coast, and his 36th across the nation, has opened in San Francisco with a gala reception for civic leaders and the press. Anita Stone, previously associated with the dancing star’s Chicago studio, has been installed as manager of the new

school. Astaire. whose role in M.G.M.’s "The Barkleys Of Broadway,” prevented his attending the opening, announced that he would inspect the new studio upon completion of his present film role.
