OHAKUNE NOTES BOROUGH COUNCIL

OHAKUNE, Last Night (O.C.)—At the monthly meeting of the Ohakune Borough Council a letter was received from the medical officer of health at Palmerston North, Dr. T. C. Lonie, requesting that wider powers be given to the borough health inspector, Mr. J. Linford. He requested that the inspector be authorised by the council to act on behalf of the council in the issuing of certificates for closing orders for habitations that were not lie for occupation. Discussing the request, Mr. T. C. Thomas said he thought that the authority asked for was excessive, considering that the inspector did i»ot live in the borough.

There were several places in the borough which should be closed and the occupants should apply for Stale houses, said the Mayor (Mr. H. F. L. Delamar). Such people, however, would not put in applications for State houses and the issuing of closing orders could improve the position.

The council decided to authorise the health inspector to issue closing orders, each to be subject to confirmation by the council. The danger caused by residents burning rubbish within the built-up area was pointed out to the council in a letter from the Ohakune Fire Board. An undertaking had been given the letter stated, that all rubbish and waste would be removed and burnt elsewhere. As the by-laws had apparently been infringed, the board asked the council to see that the undertaking was honoured. Persons lighting lires should advise the council or the fire brigade, stated Mr. N. O’Connell. The incidents which caused the Fire Board to write the letter were seen by a board member, said Mr. W. Pearce, who considered that the burning of waste so close to buildings constituted a danger. He suggested, in view of the undertaking given by the council, that the letter should be received, and that course was adopted. DOMAIN BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the Ohakune Domain Board was held in the Borough Council Chambers, when Mr. H. F, L. Delamar presided over an attendance of Messrs Hutton, Pearce, Mereikura, McCullough, Martin, Thomas, and Mahoney. The chairman reported on the improvements made to the camp site and stated that the water supply was inadequate and the well would’ require deepening. Sereral speakers remarked that the additions to the camp site were a vast improvement. The secretary to the board (Mr. W. L. Brown) remarked that several complaints had been received regarding stock wandering in the reserves. It was decided that the solicitor (Mr. I. Dobbie) be requested to write to the offenders and state that legal action would be taken.
