"BRAKES ON MOTOR VEHICLES. ’ AS from Monday, November Sth, 1948. regular checks will be made by the Transport Department on brakes on motor-vehicles. Traffic inspectors of the Transport Department have been instructed to issue Traffic Offence Notices with a view to the prosecution of those drivers in all cases of infringement of Reg. 8 of the Traffic Regulations, 1936. Briefly, this Regulation requires:— 1. That no person shall operate a motor-vehicle unless it is equipped with two independent brakes, one being a footbrake and one being a handbrake. 2. That no person shall operate a motor-vehicle unless tai the footbrake is capable o r bringing the vehicle to a standstill within a distance of 40 feet from a speed of 20 miles per hour: (b) the hand-brake is capable of bringing the vehicle to a standstill within a distance of 70 feet from a speed of 20 miles per hour and also is canable of holding the vehicle at rest on a grade of one in five. 3. That no person shall operate a trailer over two tons laden weight unless it is equipped with a handbrake which, applied to the loaded trailer alone, is capable of meeting the requirements of 2 (bl above. (These provisions do not apply to motor-vehicles operating under the Transport Licensing Act. For these a higher standard of brake efficiency is required.) G. L. LAURENSON, Commissioner of Transport.
