Senator Denies That He Impugned Moral Characters Of Girls
CANBERRA, Oct. 27 (Recd. 12.1 am).—“The report was a lie in the first place. It was a deliberate misrepresentation of the statements T made,” said Senator S. W. O’Flaherty, in the Senate today, referring to remarks he was alleged to have made about Australian girls working in America, which were published in the newspapers.
“The press deliberately misconstrued my statements, and upon such lies founded subsequent reports in order to defeat the Government. Throughout the whole of my speech I did not, in one word or sentence, impugn the moral characters of antgirls working overseas; nor did I impugn the character of any Australian anywhere.”
Mr. O'Flaherty was reported as saying that unless girls in America married the Government should insist on their return to Australia to make sure “that the same thing will not happen as in South America, where the girls ended up in brothels, or some place.”
