Shearing Begins. In preparation for the first Wanganui wool sale of the season, scheduled for December 3, shearing operations have begun in the district. Provided the weather is fine, it is expected that a full allotment of 25,000 bales will be submitted at the opening sale.

Grading of Pork “Pig and pork grading will be introduced soon and the sooner the better it will be for the industry,” declared Mr A E. Winter a member of the Taranaki District Pig Council, at yesterday’s meeting of the Wanganui Provincial Executive of Federated Farmers.

Luxury Imports. “Too many licences have been wasted on luxury goods, and not used for essential imports,” said a member at yesterday’s meeting of the Wanganui Provincial Executive ot Federated Farmers. ‘‘Yes. Satins instead of sheeting, for instance,” commented another member.

Kennel Club Show. Members of the Wanganui Kennel Club will hold their Spring Challenge Show jn conjunction with the Wanganui A. and P. Show, on the second dav of the fixture “People’s Day,” which will be on Saturday, November 13. It was stated yesterday that entries are coming in very satisfactorily for all sections. ‘‘The way things are going now the time is not far distant when, if one wants to see a real live pig, one will have to visit a zoological park,” declared Mr. A. R. Considerable interest is being taken in the effort sponsored by the Wanganui branch of the Navy League to give a fillip to the campaign for food for children in needy areas in Britain. The effort centres on Guy Fawkes Day, November 5 (Friday of next week), and business houses, supporting the scheme, will hang “guys” on poles outside their premises in an effort to raise money for the Navy League fund. A trophy valued at £1 Is has been donated for the best “guy” and will be presented at the height of the appeal, at 4 p.m. on Friday in Maria Place. Already several business houses in Victoria Avenue have expressed their intention of supporting the scheme by exhibiting “guys.”

Winter Fann Schools. Details of successful winter farm schools which have been organised throughout the North Island last year were given to yesterday’s meeting of tne Wanganui Provincial Executive of Federated Farmers by Mr. A. R. Dingwall, of the Department of Agriculture at Wanganui. No winter farm schools had yet been held in the Wanganui area, said Mr. Dingwall. These schools usually extended over two days. Talks were given by research officers from such organisations as the Grasslands Division, and field officers of the Department of Agriculture. The matters discussed dealt with many problems of farming and time was also devoted to lectures to the womenfolk on such matters as gardening and home science. Successful winter schools had been held in the South Taranaki and Manawatu districts.
