TWO WANGANUI PLAYERS STILL IN N.Z. WOMEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP PLAY

PALMERSTON N., Last Night (PA) —A treacherous wind irom me west, which increased during the morning, made playing conditions on the tnnu day of the New Zealand women's championship more difficult than on the two previous days, interest focussed on the second round of tile championships played in tne morning, when six of the seven remaining scecied players won their way into the quarter-finals to be played on Monday morning. Mrs. J. Cliff, Manawatu open and club champion, was the only player unexpectedly defeated, hei opponent being Mrs C. N. Jacobson (Auckland). Other prominent players were nut extended in their matches, most of tnem winning comfortably with u. > exception of Mrs. Jackson Ball, who found in Mrs. A. H. Macdonald a determined opponent. Mrs. G. W. Hollis, who held the title in 1947, scored well in her match with Mrs. J. B. Hatrick, to beat her 1 and 2. A semi- finalist at last year’s tournament, Miss R. C. Hodges, who beat Mrs. N. S. Hawkes 5 and 3 on Saturday, will meet Mrs. Hollis tomorrow, when she will be required to play more consistently if she is to be a match for her quarter-final opponent. One of the longest handicap players in the championship, Mrs C. N. Jacobsen, proved too good for Mrs. Cliff and, winning the first four holes, went into an impressive lead, which she held until the 12th hole, where Mrs. Cliff had her third bogey of the match. Mrs. Cliff had, however, left the recovery too late and when Mrs. Jacobsen took advantage of the strong following wind at the 13th to score a biraie 4 and regained her lead of 4 up, Mrs. Cliff appeared to have little hope of squaring the game, which finished in Mrs. Jacobsen’s favour on the next hole. A South Island player to reach the quarter-finals is Miss K. Rutherford, who beat Mrs. C. McCormick 2 up in a match where there was littie to choose between the players, neither playing particularly bright golf. Fortunate in drawing long handicap players in the first two rounds, tne holder of the title, Miss E. Wilkinson, should not find difficulty in eliminating Miss N. Beverly in tomorrow’s round. In her match with Mrs. R. H. Coker on Saturday, she did not score well but her opponent was not able to take advantage of Miss Wilkinson's temporary lapses and the game was decided 5 and 3 in the champion’s favour. Mrs. R. S. Fullerton-Smith showed definite signs of her old form when she beat Miss K. Shand (Otago). The latter, who had beaten Miss M. Hughes in the first round, was expected by some to prove troublesome to the ex-champion, but Mrs. Fuller-ton-Smith played an easy, straight game for which she is renowned, losing only one hole in the first nine and reaching the 'turn 2 up. Another ex-champion, Mrs. Jackson Ball, did not play her usual consistent golf. Slight inaccuracies, however, did not prevent her beating Mrs. A. H. Macdonald 2 and 1. Mrs. H. Murray (Miramar) a player who is likely to be a finalist, accounted for Mrs. I. Z. Casey 5 A Results were as follow: N.Z. CHAMPIONSHIP. Second Round: Mrs. G. W. Hollis (Titirangi) beat Mrs. J. B.
