Mangakino Workers Union Election; Little Change
(P.A.) Auckland. Sept. 14. Little if any swing in favour of moderates was shown in the election of officers of the Mangakino branch of the Workers’ Union, held today. - In a secret ballot, for which work | was stopped this alternoon, Mr. D. Ross was re-elected secretary, with a. - majority ot 56 over Mr. L. Forbe ! the candidate of moderates. Mr. 1 Forbes was also defeated in an election I held tonight for the presidency. The new president is Mr. M. M. McDonald. ; a Maori who was unopposed as vicej president in the original nomination . [The post of vice-president was filled tonight by Mr. T. E. Logan, a ( known moderate. A new executive, i’ consisting of Messrs. H. J. Allen, I S. K. McDonald, R. A. Gilbert. B. W. I Jones. B. T Maugham and 11. Porter is described as being divided between moderates and extremists . A fairly good muster voted at both the evening meeting and the secret ballot in the afternoon for the secreI tary and the executive, which was I carefully conducted. The Mangakino and hydro-electric construction jobs nearby at Maraetai, ilhakamaru and Waipawa, have been I free of serious labour disputes since (that which arose in March over the 1 transfer of Mr. L. Clapham, former Communist secretary of the union.
