Composting Of Town Waste To Be Inquired Into By City Council

On the motion of Cr. R. E. Jack, seconded by Cr. N. M. Izard, the Wanganui City Council, at its monthly meeting last night, decided to ascertain wnat steps, if any, have been made regarding the composting of wastes by the municipalities of Masterton, New Plymouth, Napier and Hastings. “The question of composting municipal wastes is one tliat I approach with caution,” said Cr. Jack. “I am not in favour of launching at the moment into any large - scale scheme, involving substantial expenditure. Nevertheless, there seems reason to think that, by starting in a very small way, we might be able to begin a sell-supporting scheme from which we might gain valuable experience and which we might later feel justified in expanding if it proves successful.

“A large number of bodies in the city have made representations to the council on the subject of municipal composting, and, to avoid caution becoming mere inaction, councillors rpay well feel it desirable that we should seek further information on the practical aspects of the matter,Cr.
