FARMERS’ REPLY TO MANUFACTURERS. (P.A.) Wellington, July 31. "The present situation in New Zealand of having every industry under the sun operating is wasteful and must push up costs,” said Mr. W. N. Perry, Dominion President of Federated Farmers, today, replying briefly to comments made yesterday by Mr. D. I. Macdonald, secretary of the Manufacturers’ Federation, about the efficiency of the New Zealand industry. “I would like to thank Mr. Macdonald for the way in which he has lectured the farmers of New Zealand,” continued Mr. Perry. “I think Mr. Macdonald and his council will be compelled to admit that the present state of industry brings about the same result as ’spelling’ practised by the watersiders. Compare this position with what would obtain if we had a small number of efficient and economic industries turning out at low cost goods that we really need."
