Rugby Player Who Struck Referee Is Suspended For Life

Whangarei, June 29 Suspension for life was the penalty which the Mangonui Rugby SubUnion’s Judicial Committee last night imposed on George Wells, of the Kiwi United Football Club, for striking a referee. Wells was also debarred from the Rugby football grounds for the remainder of the 1948 season.

The committee’s action arose from an incident during a Kiwi United v. Kaitaia senior A match at Pamapuria on June 19, when Wells knocked out the referee, Mr. J. E. Wilkinson, after having been ordered (j , _ om the field for illegal tactics. Wells is aged 33. Taken into account by the committee was a report of his otherwise excellent character on the football field. This lapse was stated to be the only black mark on the player’s history. Wells said he lost his head when accused of conduct of which he thought he was innocent.
