BASKETBALL COMMENT

SUPERIORITY OF T.O.G. NGA TOA’S FIRST WIN When Technical Old Girls and Past Students met in Wanganui senior basketball on Saturday, T.O.G. were clearly the superior team. They took the lead early and maintained it comfortably throughout the game. Their defence players were sound ana reliable, v Kh B. Forward playing an outstanding gan.-e. P. Phillips was prominent in die centre tmrd while a 1 three forwards combined well and slot with consistent accuracy. Chief weakness in the Students’ side was the absence of a first pass □layer in botli centre and forward thirds. Defence players repeatedly opened an attacking movement only to find that no centre player was advancing to a position to continue (he move. Forward players, too, appeared uncertain as to who was to take the first pass T.O.G. led 19-7 at half-time, and eventually ran out the winners by 27 goals to 14. Teams. T.0.G.: L. Breed (captain), J. Platt, V. Jackson ani M Gibson. Nga Toa Scort First Win. By the narrow margin of one goal, Nga Toa registered their first win ot the season, at the expense of St, Mary’s. Nga Toa were greatly improved by tne trai si- oi D. uosner from centre to g< al third where she attacked strongly throughout and added drive to the (inward play. Nga Toa scored first, St. Mary's equalling shortly after. Secies kept level from that point, and tne game was very even. Defence players n both teams gave excellent displays to keen the attacks alternating. J. McCashin again was outstanding for St- Mary's, while M. McCashin was tireless and quick to capitalise on dropped passes. B. Hughes, of Nga Toa centre, was right on form, being backed up splendidly by M Platt.
