Australia Increases Lead In Cricket Test !

Bright sunshine prevailed when the fourth day s play in the second cricket test between England and Australia opened at Lord's today. After two and a-half overs, torrential rain began to fall and play was stopped. An inspection of the wicket was carried . out after the rain stopped and it was i announced that a further inspection would be made at 12.30 p.m. Bedser opened the bowling with Brown scoring a two off the first ball. Laker took the second over, Miller scoring a three. Miller scored a single off Bedser’s second over, but the rain then began to fall in torrents. At this stage Australia’s second innings score stood at 349 for the loss of four wickets, with Miller 26 not out and Brown 9 not out. Play was resumed at 12.45 p.m. in bright sunshine. Two large piles of sawdust were placed near the bowl- , ers’ runs at each end of the wicket and sawdust was placed by the bowlers’ in their footmarks to give them a better footing as they ran up to the wickets to make their deliveries. Miller was dropped by Dollery at long leg when the score stood at 3.98 for the loss of four wickets. Rain began to fall steadily at 1.20 a.m. A few minutes later Miller scored a single off Coxon to bring the total to 400 and his score to 60. Australia now had

a lead of 535 on England with six wickets still in hand. At the luncheon adjournment Australia's score was 409 for four wickets.
