Requests For Gum Trees For Birds More Than Can Be Handled

“This year we budgeted for 1000 trees and have been given 2000,” said the president (Mr H. Manguson) at last night’s annual meeting of the Wanganui Acclimatisation Society when reporting or. the success of the society’s policy of growing suitable trees to provide food for native birds. An application for 200 trees had been received from as far away as Oroua. The tree planting programme was a commendable one and it was interesting to see the number of tuis and bell birds near Wanganui wherever the society had planted gum trees. The secretary (Mr. W. M. Falconer) said the original plan was to issue the trees to the Wanganui district only and to send out a few trees to neighbourin" societies as a complimentary gesture. Now applications were being received from many outside areas and he was simply being swamped with requests.

The president said that the trees were now ready for planting out. The following officers were elected: Patron, Mr. James Allison; president, Mr. H. Manguson; vice-presidents, Messrs L. Sheppard, J. Dunlop, A. L. Nalder and F. M. Banks; council, Messrs F. Allison, H. R. Beauchamp, K. Prowse, A. H. Coe, S. H. Cave, F. G. Friedrich. V. Horrocks, A. H. Healey, F. Bell, G. R. Jones, J. O'Kane, M. T. Quinn, H. Rose, L. W. Young, K. Scott and P. G. James; hon. solicitor. Mr. R. S. Withers; Auditor, Mr. T. Ballingall.
