Should Referees Blow Whistle In Rugby When Ball Goes Into Touch?
(P.A.) Wellington, June 24. A request by the Otago Rugby Union for dispensation from the ruling whereby referees must blow the whistle every time the ball goes into touch was considered at today’s meeting of the executive of the New Zealand Rugby Union. It was further suggested that the matter be investigated to see if such a practice was really intended, as it appeared to be unnecessary. Members remarked that the ruling appeared to be causing irritation and served little useful purpose. It was decided to advise that the N.Z.R.N. could not grant any dispensation, but that the matter would be brought before the next meeting of the council of the N.Z.R.U. and advice sought from Messrs Sutherland and Maddison, New Zealand delegates to the Imperial Rugby Conference, on how the rule came to be passed. A request from North Auckland that its match against the New Zealand Maori team on the latter’s return from Fiji be on a Saturday, with Auckland accepting the Wednesday date was declined.
