EXSERIVCMEN AND HOUSE LOANS

INSUFFICIENT MARGIN (P.A.) Wellington, June 23. Delegates at the annual conference of the New Zealand Returned Services Association spent some hours discussing the problem of loans to returned servicemen for providing homes.

It was stated the cost of building a house of 1200 square feet in 1943 was £1350, and the same house in 1947 cost £2lOO. It was considered unreasonable and unfair that a serviceman who was fortunate to be rehabilitated in 1943 should have a £750 advantage of his brother serviceman who was rehabilitated to a house in 1947-48.

It was stated that today most exservicemen could not provide the extra cost involved out of their own reseurces. After a lengthy discussion, the problem was referred to the sub-committee of four which brought down the following remit: "That the Government be urged to raise the limit of rehabilitation housing loans in special cases where, by reason of increased building coats or varying costs of houses or new building or sections in different localities, an ex-serviceman would otherwise be wise be unable to secure a home unable to secure a home under the present £150(1 limit, any portion of the loan above £l5OO to be tion of the loan which would be interest free under the existing practice.” The remit was approved.
