Horticultural Society President Refers To Future Activity

“The end of one year merely brings us to the beginning of another, and while. we look back on the one that has passed we must be planning for the one that is before us,” stated the Horticultural Society, Mr. G. A. Ammundsen, in his annual report, presented at the annual meeting last night. , , . “Some variations in the scheduler classes are very necessary, and will receive early attention from your new executive. It is hoped by these variations to increase the scope of our shows and raise the quality in some classes,” Mr. Ammundsen added“The society has been allocated the National Chrysanthemum Society’s Show next season, and this will be one of the highlights of the year. ‘On the more material side of things I do look for a growth in membership. Can we set ourselves an objective of not less than 500 members this year?—not a very extravagant target, but one that it reached will register progress and will assure a sufficient Income for the ordinary activities of the society.’’ Reviewing the past year, Mr. Ammundsen stated that for the first time since the outbreak ot war the society was’ able to use the Drill Hall for its shows. The additional space was very welcome and it had been possible to have supporting displays to add to the public interest. Among these the Aquaria Society’s exhibits had been particularly interesting, and the special exhibit of the Women’s Club at the autumn show was a source of pleasure to many. “The Chrysanthemum and th< Gladious Club have both been a source of strength in their particular shows. With a large and enthusiastic membership both of these ensure a successful show for their partlcuiai flowers. The formation of a branch of the National Rose Society of New Zealand locally has revived Interest in roses, and this show, until recently abandoned, promises to become one ol the most beautiful ones in the society's programme,” Mr. Ammundsen stated-
