High Tributes To Deceased Legislators Paid In The House

(P.A.) Wellington, June 23. Many tributes to the work of the late Hon. Mark Fagan, Leader and speaker of the Legislative Council, were paid by the Prime Minister (Mr. Fraser) and the leader of the Oppositibn (Mr- Holland) and other members of both sides, when the House of Representatives paid its respects to the memory of deceased members and legislators. Most of the speakers made eloquent reference to the part the late Mr. Fagan played in introducing dustlaying and ventilating apparatus into the West Coast mines.

"He has left a memory which will endure to the end of our days," said Mr. Fraser, tv which Mr. Holland, on behalf of the Opposition, added that the late Mr. Fagan was a man whom every member of* both Houses claipied as a friend, and who helped to lay the foundations of the best industrial conditions in New Zealand today. The Minister of Works (Mr. Semple) spoke of his 40 years ’association with the late Mr. Fagan.

Other speakers who paid tribute were Mr. W. A. Bodkin (Opp.-, Central Otago), the Minister of Finance (Mr. Nash), the Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr. Parry), the Minister of Lands (Mr. Skinner), and the Member of the Legislative Council representing the Maori race (Mr. E. T. Tirikatene). Tributes to the work of the late Messrs. R. A. Wright (Wellington), and J- G. Elliott (Feilding) former members of the House of Representatives, were also paid by the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition, and other members. The House passed resolutions recording appreciation of the services of the late members and expressing sympathy with their relatives. The House rose as a mark of respect at 4 35 p.m. until 7.30 p.m. tomorrow.
