Wanganui and district enjoyed a perfect winter day yesterday, with almost continual bright sunshine, milder temperatures and little wind. The change was a welcome improvement on the bleak wintry weather experienced last week. Visibilty was very clear and at Castlecliff a slight sea was running. The barometer at 4 p.m. was rising at 30.2in5., compared with 29.79in5. 24hours previously. Saving of Time by Air That it had taken him longer to get from Palmerston North to Wanganui than from Dunedin to Palmerston North, was mentioned by a Wanganui business man who returned from the South Island last week-end. He said that he left Dunedin at 2 p.m. by air and arrived at Palmerston North at 5.5 p.m. He then had to wait in Palmerston North until 7 p.m. to catch a service car which arrived in Wanganui at 8.30 p.m.

“Frogs Assist Choir.” A patriotic concert given by the Wanganui Male Choir from a punt on Virginia Lake during World War I was recalled by Mr. O. Kitson (Tauranga) at the reunion of past members last night. Mr. Kitson. who was conductor of the choir at the time, said the punt was moved out to the middle of the lake, and for a start all appeared to be going well. “And then 1 noticed a strange noise coming from the basses and baritones, who appeared to be out of Xune,” Mr. Kitson added. “I became a bit worried and told the choir that some of them were not singing at all well. ‘Please, Mr. Kitson,’ said one member, ‘lt is not the choir, it is the frogs.’ Next morning the ‘Chronicle’ came out with the heading: ‘Frogs Join in'Chorus of Male Choir at Virginia Lake.’ ” Motor RegistrationIn order to make the registration of motor vehicles easier tor people who cannot attend without inconvenience during the normal period from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., the hours of attendance at motor registration counters of the Wanganui Chief Post Office are being extended. The office will remain open for this purpose till 5 p.jnti. today, and tomorrow will be open from 9 a.m. to 5.30 p.m- and from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. From Monday to Wednesday (last day of the month) the counters will be open continuously from 9 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. and from 7 p m. to 8 p.m. From Monday to Wednesday (last day of the month) the counters will be open continuously from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. “Motorists who intend relicensing are urged to lodge their applications now in order to avoid that congestion and consequent delay to themselves,” said the chief postmaster, Mr. R. L. Horn, yesterday. More Members Wanted

“It is obvious that enlargement of our members will come omy by an organised canvass, and some of us have been considering ways and means of having such a canvass made,” stated the president of the Wanganui Horticultural Society, Mr. G. A. Ammundsen, in his annual report presented at the meeting last night. Due to a number of causes the society concluded this year with a loss. Rent of the Drill Hall was fairly high and to stage five shows had cost the society the equivalent of £1 a week all the year round for rent. If this were to continue the new executiv would be faced with a very serious problem, but the difficulty may not be so formidable as it appeared at present. “While our sources of income have not been changed, membership, the back log of the society's finance, is still available at 5s yearly, a very small subscription,” Mr Ammundsen added. “There is a case for increasing oui membership and I believe it would be much more preferable to do so.”
