Southland Reports Glut Of Potatoes
(P A.) Invercargill, June 9. Potato growers in western Southland are faced with the position of having record yields this season and having no immediate market for their supplies. Last year the Governmer’ made a request for greater potato production so that potatoes could be sent to Britain, and bigger areas than usual were grown in the western district of Southland.
It was reported at a meeting of the Southland provincial executive of Federated Farmers today that several lots had been forwarded but had been condemned for nc apparent reason by a Government grader, and that apparently the appeal had been overdone. Invercargill firms have received orders from the North Island for South■and potatoes, but at present there is no shipping space. Citv stores are tilled to capacity, and they cannot take any more potatoes until such time as a clearance is made.■
