Riots On Gold Coast Not Inspired By Communists

The recent riots on the Gold Coast were mentioned by Dr. R. H. Bowie In a talk to the Wanganui Rotary Club yesterday. He said it had been reported in the Press that they had been inspired by a Communist element. As one who had been there in recent years, Dr. Bowie said he did not think that was correct. In the recent war the British had enlisted the services of several hundred of the native population of the Gold Coast for duty with the Army. They were paid and equipped and encountered benefits which they had never before been accustomed to, said Dr. Bowie. With the cessation of hostilities they were transported back to the Gold Coast and back to their respective villages, where they had to resume their former way of life without any payment whatever. Naturally they became restless, and the riots were a sequel to their discontent, said Dr. Bowie.

There were no politics on the Gold Coast, as the chiefs of the different tribes had all the say. There was no Opposition.
