Rangitikei Hockey Teams Do Well At Feilding Tournament

Although a Rangitikei team did not win the annual King's Day women’s seven-a-side hockey tournament at Feilding on Monday, teams from this, district did exceedingly weS, three contesting the semi-finals. The tournament was won by Hutt United, who also emerged victorious last year. The trophy for the most scientific player was awarded to Mrs. Donaghue (Hutt). The Marton team also performed creditably in the men’s section, winning their way to the semi-final when they were beaten by Woodville, a team which eventually won the tournament. All six teams in the Feilding competition (Marton is affiliated to Feilding) won their sections. Marton scored 14 goals luring the tournament and had only one registered against them, that being in the semi-final. Bulls and Swifts were the only Rangitikei teams not to win their sections, in the women’s tournament, United, Tuis, Huia. Te Kauwau, Huimai. All entering the section finals. Post section winners were (first round): Woodville 1 v Collegians (Wanganui) 0, Tuis 1 v Technical Old Girls (Wanganui) 0, United 4 v Huia 0. (Second round): Hutt United 3 v Pakeha (Taihape) 0, Huimai 4 v Massey College 0, Te Kauwau 2 v Woodville 0, United 2 v Tuis 0. Semi-final: Te Kauwau beat United by a hit behind, Hutt United beat Huimai by a hit behind. Final: Hutt United beat Te Kauwau by a hit behind. The winners owed their success to their superior positional play and their ability to stop the ball—a department of the game which Rangitikei teams are inclined to he weak. Marton United gave some great exhibitions early in the day, but on reaching the semi-final they failed to play with their usual dash. Te Kauwau did well to reach the final as in the first game they played wii.n only five players and drew with Marton United B. In the next game Te Kauwau successfully won with six players. A Te Kauwau team also went to Wellington to participate in a tournament in that centre. However, it was postponed at the last minute, but grounds were made available for three friendly games. Te Kauwau were beaten in both their matches, losing to Toa 1 nil and Wellington College Old Girls 4-nil. After winning their section in the Feilding men’s tournament, Marton in the post section play beat Huia B 2-0, and Karori A 1-0. They were beaten by Woodville 1-0 in the semifinal. Woodville later beat Karori by a hit behind in the final. £5OO MARK IN SIGHT FOR CHILDREN’S APPEAL. Donations in Marton toward the United Nations Appeal for Children are approaching the £5OO mark.
