Prime Ministers Of Empire May Not Confer For Some Time Ahead
Recd. 11 p.m. Canberra, June 8. The Prime Miniter, Mr. Chifley, announced today that indications were that, due to the commitments of some Prime Ministers, it would be impossible to bring the Empire Prime Ministers together for an Empire conference for some time ahead.
Although Mr. Chifley did not comment further, it is learned officially that Australia believed there might be talks between the United Kingdom Government and individual Empire Prime Ministers. Australia and New Zealand were particularly interested In economic problems. It was believed their problems in this field were not shared by Canada, South Africa, India and Pakistan. It was possible that Mr. Chifley and Mr. Peter Fraser would go to Britain- by the end of the year for talks with Mr. Attlee.
