N.Z. League Captain Is To Retire

Recd. 10 p.m. Brisbane, June 7 The New Zealand Rugby League captain, Pat Smith, says he will retire at the end of this season after finishing the season with the Prebbleton Club, near Christchurch. He intends to devote his football interests either to coaching, refereeing or in the administrative side. He is now 32, and has played in 55 matches since April 1947. The sequence was interrupted only by a boat trip to England, a knee injury in France, and a broken nose in New Zealand.
