Shops Reopen Today After being closed since Friday night, shops will resume normal trading today in Wanganui. There will be a demand for fresh bread and meat supplies and other provisions to refill larders which have been heavily depleted over the holiday week-end. •

Licensing Committee. Renewals of hotel licences, transfers and the issue of new licences will be dealt with by the Wanganui Licensing Committee when the annual meeting is held at. noon today. Chairman of the committee is Mr. J. H. Salmon, S.M., and the annua! meeting is usually held early in June.

Girl’s Fall From Cycle. Found lying on the footpath in Glasgow Street at about 8.45 last night with her cycle alongside her, Miss Elsie Townsend, of 80 Keith Street, was taken to the Wanganui General Hospital by ambulance and admitted for observation. The girl was dazed when taken to a nearby residence and unable to say how the fall from her cycle occurred.

Three Rugby Teams The Wanganui Rugby Union had three representative teams engaged in matches yesterday. Wanganui was successful in the A game against Taranaki, played on Spriggens Park, but lost the B match to Taranaki B played in New Plymouth. At Palmerston North the junior fifteen were beaten narrowly by Manawatu by 9 points o 6. _

Cars and Petrol Shortage. Judging by the number of cars parked in the vicinity of the course yesterday, when the Wanganui Jockey Club held the second day events of their steeplechase meeting, patrons from distant centres had either saved their May petrol ration or cashed in early on the June coupons. About 900 vehicles were accommodated in the enclosures, and this total was swelled to nearly 1500 by cars in the precincts of the course.

Music at Rugby and Races A ■ programme of music was presented by the Wanganui Garrison Band, under the baton of Mr. R. Francis, L.R.S.M., first at the Wanganui v. Taranaki representative Rugby match at Spriggens Park yesterday morning, and afterwards at the Wanganui Jockey Club’s meeting. Of particular appeal to race patrons was a special item featuring the band’s drum section. Formed up in front of the main stand, the drummers caught the eye with their white gloves and intricate stick movements.

King’s Day Weather. Though the observance of King's Day in Wanganui was favoured by fine weather, there was a cold easterly wind which robbed the sun’s rays of their warmth and caused a fall in temperatures. The wind was moderate to fresh for the must part and was even more noiaceabla :n the late afternoon, when clouds obscured the sun and conditions became rather bleak. Barometric pressure, however, was comparatively high, jhe reading at 3 p.m. being 30.40 in., wnen the barometer was steady alter rising over the week-end. At Castlecllff a considerable swell was running.

Many People Travel. Many people took advantage of the long holiday week-end to visit other parts of the North Island, with the result that rail and road travel facilities were fully taxed. Buses operated by Railway Road Motors between Wellington, Wanganui and New Plymouth were practically al! fully booked in advance, traffic yesterday, when people were returning home, being particularly heavy. The express from Wellington to Auckland was a full train passing through Marton Junction last night.

O.E.M.S. Conference. Plans for the annual Dominion conference of the Church of England Men's Society, to be held in the Christ hurch Parish Hall next week, are nearing completion. Delegates from all parts of New Zealand will be present and the conference will open at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, June 15, with a civic reception. That night there will be a mass meeting in the Opera House with the Bishop of Waiapu, the Rt. Rev. N. A. Lesser, as the speaker. The main business of the conference will be taken on the Wednesday and will include addresses by the Venerable E. A. Osmers (Christchurch) and Mr D. W. Stalker (Invercargill). During the procession of witness that evening an openair address will be given by the Rev. C. D. C. Caswell, Auckland city missioner, and at 8 p.m. festal evensong will be held in Christ Church.x The preacher will be the Bishop of Wellington, the Rt. Rev. R. H. Owen. The conference is expected to conclude early on Thursday.
