Dunedin Transport Services At A Standstill

(P.A.) Dunedin, May 31. The Dunedin branch of the New Zealand Tramways Union decided by secret ballot at a stopwork meeting this afternoon not to operate any of the city transport services Vintil such time as the City Councils Transport Committee receives a deputation from the executive of the union to discuss the present dispute about payment of acting drivers at drivers’ rates. This decision was reached by the union by 240 votes to 45. After the deputation to engineer-manager, Mr. L. C. Greig had been informed '.hat the deputation would be heard only when the trams and buses were again operating as usual, the union set up a strike committee comprising members of the executive, and will hold a further meeting tomorrow afternoon to discuss the position. All city transport services came to a standstill shortly after 2 p.m., when the Union held a secret ballot whether transport services should be operated after stop work meeting up to midnight, but. this proposal was rejected. The result of the union’s decision to strike appears to be that none of the city transport services will operate until such time as a meeting is arranged between the parties to the dispute.
