Trade Union Attitude To Disciplinary Legislation

Reed. 11 p.m. Melbourne, May 26.

The attitude of the Australian Council of Trade Unions to “antiunion legislation” by various State Governments was defined today in a statement by the president (Mr. P. J. Clarey). He said such legislation, when linked with punitive provisions of the Defence Projects Act and certain sections of the Crimes Act constituted a direct challenge to the labour movement.

“The A.C.T.U. warns those responsible for introducing legislation aimed at. suppressing the legitimate rights of tjie trade union movement that their actions cannot be tolerated,” he said. “Better industrial relations cannot be secured in Australia while repressive legislation remains and fines and penalties are imposed on union officials and workers who carry out the instructions of their unions.” *
