Talk To League Of Mothers, Wanganui, On First Aid In The Home

An instructive talk on “First Aid in the Home’’ was given by Sister M. Westwood at the monthly meeting of the League of Mothers yesterday. Welcomed and introduced by the president, Mrs. J. P. Morrison, the speaker, with the aid of a large chart of the human body, first dealt with arterial bleeding and methods of treating, also ways of stopping other forms of bleeding. Various fractures were next dealt with, and the speaker stressed the danger of moving a person with a fractured leg for fear of further damage. In such an accident until proper help can be obtained, the person should be left lying down, but treated for shock and kept warm.. Wrong handling of such a case can cause serious damage. Sister Westwood gave much excellent advice in regard to sprains, concussion, children swallowing foreign objects, choking, coughing and sore throats, also scalds and burns, for which she gave simple remedies that could be found in the home. Her talk was listened to with keen interest. Songs were sung by .irs. .j. ivouges (witn accompaniment by Mrs A. Williams) and Mrs. Alan Tinker, who played her own accompaniments, were very much enjoyed. The speaker and artists were presented with sprays and were thanked by Mrs. Moore. Mrs. Morrison thanked Mrs. Williams for acting as pianist for the afternoon and tne convener (Mrs. Bellringer) for arranging the programme. Mrs. Brooker was the door hostess. As next month’s meeting will be “members’ day,' the following committee was appointed: Mesdames F. C. Jannings (president), C. J. Lee (secretary), Jackson, Mackay, Brooker, Hughes, W. Clark, Wilson, Watts, Papps and Skeet.
