Marton’s New Sports Centre Estimated To Cost £10,000

Plans for the building of a sports centre at Centennial Park, which is estimated to cost about £10,001), were placed before the first annual meeting of the Marton Combined Sports Society on Monday night. The plans are of an elaborate nature and Mr. J. Jensen, who outlined the proposals, considered that when completed the building would be the finest sports centre in New Zealand.

The total area of the building is 13,522 square feet, the dimensions of the main hall, which can be used for dancing as well as for numerous indoor sports, being 106 feet by 50 feet. In explaining the plans, Mr. Jensen said that the society was hopeful of securing a grant of £3OOO from the Government.

The sports centre would benefit every sporting group in the town, said Mr. Williams. Nothing like the plans, as envisaged by the committee, had been attempted elsewhere in New Zealand. He felt confident that the Government would grant a subsidy for the proposal. It was explained that because of the shortage of materials, beyond the fact of securing a permit to erect conveniences and perhaps one dressing room, at the Park, the completion of the pavilion would not be for some two or three years.

Already £1451 has been spent on Centennial Park. The laying down of the five hard tennis courts cost £1277, while £174 has been spent on the two hockey fields. The wire netting for the tennis courts, and the erection of conveniences will possibly cost a further £l2OO.

The meeting was poorly attended, out of the 155 linancial members, only 17 being present. Special mention of the work of Messrs R. W. Williams and J. Jensen had carried out on Centennial Park was made by the chairman, Mr. E. V. Calkin. They had been the backbone of the Combined Sports in a very practical way and much valuable time had been given by them to the advancement of the society, he said. He also paid tribute to the work of the secretary, Mr. R. G. Kingdom

Mr. W. G. Aitken endorsed the remarks of Mr. Calkin. RUGBY FOOTBALL.
