Heavyweight Don Mullett Relinquishes Boxing Title

(P.A.) Wellington, May 25. Don Mullett, New Zealand heavyweight boxing champion, today announced his retirement. “As far as I am concerned, the heavyweight title is vacant,’’ he said. Moreover, because of transport difficulties, he has declined the offer of the Natal Sporting and Boxing Club to fight in South Africa, adding: “I have ascertained from travel agents that a stay of at least six weeks in Sydney would be involved and ever since negotiations opened the problem of how and when I could travel to the Union has been a worry,” Mullett also announced his intention of relinquishing the heavyweight crown. “I have had my quota of comebacks and will retire from the game.” He added that, it had been difficult to find opponents and there was a marked reluctance to find matches with even light-heavies.
