LAW CONCERNING INQUESTS

(P.A.) Wellington, May 22. Reference was made yesterday by the Attorney-General, Mr. Mason, to ■ statement that though 12 months had elapsed since the disappearance of Richmond Stanley Bagby, racehorse trainer, of Ellerslie, no authority had been given for holding an inquest. The Minister said the law formerly was that an inquest was to inquire Into the cause of death of a person whose body had been recovered. Cases arose where the fact of death was acknowledged, but the body could not be recovered, and the law was recently ameff-ded to enable the AttorneyGeneral to authorise an inquest into the cause of death in such cases. Applications to hold such inquests normally came through the police, who made the inquiries, and where no body was found great care was taken to ensure that the fact of death was completely established.
