RECORD NUMBER OF MOTOR VEHICLES REGISTERED IN N.L

(P A.) May 7 There was a record number of 359,457 motor-vehicles licensed in New Zealand at March 31 last, eclipsing by 15.216 the previous highest figure in December last, of 344,241. Announcing this, Mr. Hackett said that in the three months January to March, 1948, the Post Office registry issued 15,216 additional motorvehicle licences, and that in the year since March, 1947, there has been an increase of 29,882 motor-vehicle registrations. Of the 15,000 registrations in these three months, 6423 were cars, 6949 were commercial vehicles, and 1844 were motor-cycles. New Zealand totals In these classes are now: 216,459 cars, 124,012 commercial vehicles, and 18,995 motorcycles. "The total number of motorvehicles in New Zealand has been steadily Increusing In recent years,” said the Minister. "There are today over 100 000 more motor-vehicles licensed than 11 years ago.
