TALKS AS TO FUTURE OF AUSTRIA BREAK DOWN IN LONDON

Recd. 8.20 p.m. London, May 7. The Foreign Ministers’ deputies talks on the Treaty of Independence for Austria have broken down, according to the "Daily Telegraph's” diplomatic correspondent, who says that at the end their 110th. meeting in London yesterday the deputies adjourned without fixing a date to meet again.

The reason for the impasse, he adds, is the British American and French insistence on "two matters ot principle.”—(l) That Austria's frontiers should remain as they were on January 1, 1938; (2) That Austria should pay no reparations. The Russian case is flatly that Yugoslavia's "legitimate interests” cannot be satisfied without some change in the Austrian frontier. The correspondent adds that chances of a four-Power agreement with Austria now appear more remote than ever.

The imminence of important developments in Germany has doubtless increased Russia's determination not to give way.
