Mr. F. C. Jannings Retires After 47 Years With Education Board

After 47 years' service in the teaching profession, Mr. F. C. Jannings ( headmaster of the Tawhero School, retired yesterday. His record is unique, in that it was all spent under the jurisdiction of the Wanganui Education Board, and in the whole of his career he has only occupied five positions. Mr. Jannings will be succeeded at Tawhero by Mr. Leslie N. Aston, 8.A., from the‘Hawke’s Bay Education Board. There was a large attendance of parents and board officials at the farewell gathering yesterday. Among those present were Messrs W. B. Tennent (Palmerston North) chairman of the Wanganui Education Board, W. G. Price and J. C. Batt, board members, G. N. Boulton (secretary of the board), H. Hughes (chairman of the school committee), Len Young (secretary of the school committee), and N. R. Wilson, a former headmaster of the Wanganui East School.

Mr. Hughes presided and voiced the regret of the .school committee in that the school was losing the services of Mr. Jannings, but said he had well deserved his retirement. For the parents, he thanked the retiring teacher for his services to Tawhero School in the past seven years. Presenting Mr. Jannings with a set of bowls and case, Mr. Tennent said the board was losing a zealous and devoted teacher, one who had served the board for 47 years, and who had made a valuable contribution to the educational life of the Dominion. In his long career, Mr. Jannings has seen many changes, said the speaker. He was the oldest teacher In the board's service. Mr. Tennent read a .1 appreciation from the Education Board, which acknowledged Mr. Jannings’ long and devoted service and which praised his ability an co-operation. The letter expressed the hope that he would be given good health to enjoy his well earned rest. Mr. Batt and Mr. Wilson also testified to the fine record of Mr. Jannings. For the pupils, Master R. Pengelly presented Mr. Jannings with a fountain pen and wished him and Mrs. Jannings every happiness in the future. Mr. Jannings thanked the speakers for their remarks and those who had been associated with the gift. He had begun his career in Feilding in 1901, and later was on the staff ol the Wanganui District High School (now the then uriUer the charge of the late Mr. James Aitken, B.A. For more than 25 years lie taught at the Wanganui East School. Mr. Jannings said he had enjoyed his long association with the teaching profession and thanked the staff for their co-operation, and the board olficials and staff for their consideration at all times. He acknowledged the support given him in his long career b.v Mrs. .Tannings. Earlier in the day Mr. Jannings was presented with a gift from the staff.
