Grass On Side Of Road Temptation To Dairy Farmer

“I quite appreciate your difficulty and also your candour, but I’m bound to impose a fine, and no doubt it is worth your while to pay the fine for the grazing you have had." commented Mr. J. H. Salmon, S.M., in the Magistrates Court, Wanganui, yesterday, after James Ritchie, fanner, Westmere, had admitted a charge of permitting seven cows to remain on the Main Road for the purposes of grazing. The Waitotara County Council, for whom Mr. D. W. Neild appeared, prosecuted and the charge was laid under the county by-laws. Defendant said he would plead guilty, but added that during the dry weather he was short of feed. “When you see feed over the fence going to waste it is a great temptation,” he added.

A fine of 10s was imposed, with costs 12s and solicitor’s fee £1 Is.
