CYCLONIC STORMS
AREA ROUND ADELAIDE Reed. 11.40 p.m. Adelaide, April 11. Cyclonic storms struck Adelaide and a wide area surrounding the city today, causing considerable damage to property and small shipping round the coast. The storm has disrupted telephone and telegraph communication, preventing full details of the damage being obtained. Gales exceeding 80 miles an hour were experienced early this morning, unroofing many houses and forcing some ships ashore. Heavy rain also fell. Tram and trolley bus transport in Adelaide was stopped and omnibus services operated on , a restricted basis. Adelaide airport was closed today, and will remain closed tomorrow. Warnings of rough seas were issued this afternoon to shipping in Bass Strait. Storms, to a lesser degree accompanied by heavy rain, were also experienced in Victoria, where rain extinguished bushfires that had been raging for some days. Rains in Victoria will be beneficial as the State recently has experienced a prolonged dry spell, and now wheatgrowers will be able to commence sowing the next season’s crops.
