NEW SCHEME BEING ADOPTED FOR EDIBLE FAT FOR BRITAIN

(P.A.) Wellington, April 9. A scheme for the reorganising and developing edible fat collection in New Zealand has been adopted by the Aid for Britain National Council, according to a statement by the council tonight. The decision was reached at a meeting of the National Council Executive this week, after consultation with Mr. Philip Barling, of Dunedin, whose scheme in Otago, and Southland, the council now proposes to extend throughout New Zealand. It is hoped that in addition to considerable quantities of fat being obtained through other schemes, it will be possible to ship to Britain under the new arrangement another 1000 tons of fat annually, said the chairman of the National Council, Mr. F. P. Walsh. The scheme is simple and effective, and Mr. Barling has already shipped considerable quantities of fat to Britain for which he recently received a letter of thanks from the British Minister of Food, Mr. Strachey, said Mr. Walsh.

Under the countrywide scheme, the National Council will undertake to supply petrol tins to any farmer’s wife, or other person willing to 1111 tins with Edible fat. Tins will be transported free and shipped direct to the overseas gifts allocation centre, and Ministry of Food, London. The mechanics of the scheme will come under the Aid for Britain District Committees, and the basic organisation for country distribution of tins, arranged through the Women’s National organisations auxiliary, will be the Women's Division of Federated Farmers though the invitation is extended to other organisations and institutions to co-operate. To give effect to the scheme, a meeting is being held with the Womens’ Division of Federated Farmers in Timaru on April 21, and on a later date in Palmerston North, Hamilton, and Hastings, while other meetings would be arranged throughout New Zealand as required.
