AID FOR BRITAIN IN WANGANUI

EXPENSE OF EFFORT IS TO BE LIMITED MUST BE KEPT WITHIN £5OO. Il was explained to a meeting of the executive of the Wanganui Central and District Aid for Britain Committee last night that a sum not exceeding £5OO had been voted by the Aid for Britain National Council as expenses for the Wanganui campaign. This amount, it was stated, is to include the secretary’s salary, the employment of staff necessary for the administration of the large area covered by Patea in the north, Raetihi, Taihape, and Marton districts. The amount, £5OO, is a limit to which the committee can go by way of expense, and never at any time had it been suggested that a secretary was to be paid £5OO as a salary. Mrs. H. D. Robertson said there was no question that some salary should be paid, and the explanation that the amount was merely a limit, and included payment of office staff and expenses, would counter recent criticism. In reply to a question raised by Mr. W. D. Young (Red Cross) regarding the work of voluntary organisations, Mrs. J. C. Wickham said for the efficient carrying on of the campaign it was essential that the secretary should not be out of pocket as he had staff to pay and other expenses associated with the effort. The meeting was infornjpd that success was attending the efforts of the Food Coupons Committee. Yesterday coupons to the value of £36 were surrendered. It was reported that a bulk food depot had been established in the building next door to the ‘‘Chronicle" in Wicksteed Place, where gifts of food hermetically sealed will be received for packing and despatched to Britain. Encouraging reports from outside centres were received at the meeting.
